Executive Summary
Over the past four months, I have successfully launched a grassroots poultry initiative using limited resources and scientific knowledge acquired through my academic background. Despite being unemployed, I have bred 29 road runner chicks from just 2 roosters and 3 hens, and 19 turkey chicks from 5 turkeys, with more expected from ongoing broody hatches. Using locally available materials such as half bricks from my parents’ farm, I constructed chick housing by applying physics principles—demonstrating innovation and resourcefulness. I’ve also implemented basic biosecurity measures and expanded infrastructure to support future growth. Vision & Goals - Scale up to 100+ birds by 2026 August - Sell poultry meat to local and regional markets - Build improved housing and secure the farm environment - Enhance natural instincts in birds to boost survival and productivity - Attract investors to support expansion - Transform the project into a fully operational abattoir Family-run poultry project with 29 road runner chicks, 19 turkeys, and seasonal maize feed. Built housing using local materials and science skills. Seeking investment to expand flock, improve infrastructure, and build abattoir for local meat supply. Strong growth potential. This project is built on the strength of family collaboration, where I work closely with my parents to drive a sustainable poultry and feed production initiative. Together, we have created a resilient system that leverages our combined efforts, knowledge, and resources. Over the past seasons, we have consistently pooled our hard-earned income to plough maize, ensuring a reliable supply of feed for our poultry. My parents actively support the operation by sourcing crude concentrate supplements from local livestock feed shops, while I apply my scientific training to manage poultry health, biosecurity, and infrastructure development. Our teamwork is rooted in: - Shared labor: All three of us participate in seasonal maize cultivation. - Resource pooling: We reinvest personal funds to sustain and grow the project. - Knowledge integration: Scientific understanding meets practical farming experience. - Feed security: We maintain a modest but strategic stock of feed to support poultry growth. This family-driven model demonstrates how grassroots collaboration can fuel agricultural innovation and resilience. With continued support and potential investment, we aim to scale operations, improve infrastructure, and contribute meaningfully to local food systems. Surviving on basic inputs like buying stock feed concentrate of 50 USD that will cover five months only. Building structures using resources such as gum trees, brick layering with termite soil the old fashioned way and using past experience of my parents together with innovations. Zimbabwe’s poultry market is growing, driven by rising demand for chicken and eggs, urbanization, and government support. Regionally, SADC and COMESA offer access to over 500M consumers. Despite input costs and disease risks, innovation and local feed production boost potential.
