The Onandjo Aquafarming cc is a community-based freshwater aquaculture initiative located in Onandjo Village, Omusati Region, approximately 22 kilometers south-east of Okahao in northern Namibia. This project is a strategic and sustainable response to two of Namibia’s most pressing challenges: widespread food insecurity and high unemployment. According to the World Food Programme, approximately 1.3 million Namibians, nearly half the national population, are food insecure. Concurrently, unemployment affects 37% of the population [1], with rural areas like Onandjo disproportionately impacted. However, projected financials can be outlined based on industry benchmarks, expected production volumes, and estimated operating costs. These projections typically include startup costs, revenue forecasts based on fish yield and market prices, and anticipated profit margins. Investors will rely on these forward-looking estimates to assess the venture’s potential viability and return on investment Namibia’s domestic demand for fish is growing steadily, with annual consumption currently at approximately 23,000 metric tons. Per capita fish intake has increased from 4 kg at independence to 18.07 kg in 2025, and the government aims to reach the global average of 20.4 kg per person, which would require about 47,000 tons annually. Despite being a major marine fish exporter, Namibia faces significant supply gaps inland, where access to affordable fish remains limited. The Omusati region and surrounding northern areas are underserved in terms of local fish supply. The Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) has improved distribution through regional outlets and community engagement programs, but there is still substantial unmet demand, particularly in rural areas. The Onandjo Aquafarming cc (OA) will implement a community-driven marketing strategy targeting households, vendors, farmers, institutions, and aspiring aquaculture entrepreneurs. Key markets include local consumers seeking affordable protein, informal traders, smallholder farmers in need of organic fertilizer, and institutions such as schools and clinics participating in feeding programs. Fish will be sold directly through local markets, vendor partnerships, and supply agreements with government institutions. Dam mud fertilizer will be marketed to village farmers and cooperatives. Aquaculture training services will be promoted to unemployed youth, small businesses, and NGOs through outreach events, school partnerships, and agricultural forums. Promotion will utilize local radio, community events, word-of-mouth, and social media platforms like Facebook and WhatsApp. OA will host product demonstrations, training previews, and tasting events to raise visibility and trust. Branded packaging will help position OA’s products as high-quality, and community based. Strategic partnerships with agencies like the Namibia Fish Consumption Promotion Trust (NFCPT) will support broader distribution and visibility. By combining traditional outreach with modern communication tools, OA aims to build strong local loyalty, attract institutional buyers, and become a recognized player in Namibia’s inland fish value chain.
