As the Founder and General Manager of Meltex Textile and Apparel Manufacturing, my role is both strategic and operational, rooted in a long-term vision to position Ethiopia as a competitive force in the global textile and apparel industry. I, Melaku Tegegn, established the company in 2021 after identifying a critical gap in the domestic market: the lack of high-quality, locally manufactured workwear that meets international standards. My professional foundation is grounded in technical and managerial expertise. I hold a Bachelor of Science in Textile Engineering from Bahir Dar University (BDU), earned in 2008, and later pursued a Master of Business Administration (MBA) from the American College of Technology (ACT). This combination of engineering precision and business leadership has enabled me to build Meltex with a balanced approach—integrating production excellence with sound strategic management. Prior to founding Meltex, I accumulated over eight years of hands-on experience in Ethiopia’s textile and garment sector. I progressed through roles ranging from shop-floor supervision to senior management, gaining deep exposure to production systems, quality assurance frameworks, workforce management, and export logistics. This journey allowed me to develop a comprehensive understanding of the entire value chain—from raw material handling to finished garment delivery in international markets. In my current role, I am responsible for defining and executing the company’s strategic direction. This includes business development, operational oversight, financial stewardship, and stakeholder engagement. I lead the design and implementation of production systems that prioritize efficiency, consistency, and scalability, ensuring that our output meets both domestic and export requirements. I also oversee compliance with international standards, including our ISO 9001 certification, which reflects our commitment to quality management systems and continuous improvement. A core aspect of my leadership is building a culture centered on quality, ethics, and accountability. From the outset, I made a deliberate decision that Meltex would not compete on cost alone, but rather on value—delivering durable, well-crafted garments produced under ethical working conditions. This philosophy influences every layer of the organization, from supplier selection and material sourcing to workforce training and customer engagement. Operationally, I am deeply involved in optimizing production workflows, minimizing waste, and improving turnaround times. I work closely with technical teams to ensure that machinery utilization, line balancing, and quality control processes are aligned with industry best practices. At the same time, I maintain strong relationships with clients, ensuring that we understand and meet their specifications, timelines, and compliance requirements. Another critical dimension of my role is talent development. I believe that sustainable growth in manufacturing depends on skilled and motivated human capital. I prioritize continuous training programs, mentorship, and capacity building to empower our workforce. By investing in people, we not only enhance productivity but also contribute to broader socioeconomic development. The founding journey of Meltex was not without challenges. In the early stages, we faced significant barriers—limited access to finance, difficulty in securing reliable clients, and intense competition from imported products. Building credibility in the market required persistence and a relentless focus on delivering consistent quality. Through disciplined execution and adherence to our core values, we gradually established trust with our clients and partners. Today, Meltex stands as one of Ethiopia’s emerging and respected garment manufacturers. We specialize in producing high-quality workwear and apparel that meet rigorous international standards. Our growth trajectory reflects not only operational success but also the strength of our underlying vision: to transform Ethiopia’s textile sector into a hub of excellence. Looking forward, my role continues to evolve as I steer the company toward expansion and greater global integration. This includes exploring export opportunities, investing in advanced manufacturing technologies, and strengthening sustainability practices. I am particularly focused on aligning Meltex with global trends such as environmentally responsible production, circular economy principles, and digital transformation in manufacturing. In summary, my role as Founder and General Manager encompasses vision-setting, execution, and leadership across all dimensions of the business.
