Executive Summary
Youth in Uganda are the youngest population in the world, with 77% of its population being under 25 years of age. There are 7,310,386 youth from the ages of 15–24 years of age living in Uganda. Youth is a socially constructed intermediary phase that stands between childhood and adulthood. UNICEF generally defines youth as being between the ages of 15 and 24 years old. The youth policy defines youth as all young persons, female and male, aged 12 to 30 years. The unemployment rate for young people in Uganda ages 15–24 is 83%. This rate is even higher for those who have formal degrees and live in the urban area. This is due to the disconnect between the degree achieved and the vocational skills needed for the jobs that are in demand for workers. This project will focus on identifying the Kampala slum youth school dropouts of ages 13 to 30 years from selected slum settlements in the five divisions of Kampala which will include Kamwokya II in central, Naguru go down in Nakawa, Kasubi in Rubaga, Bukasa-Namuwongo in Makindye and Mulago II in Kawempe and link them to vocational and entrepreneurship training institutions and partners. This will be done by providing grant funding to the youth to learn entrepreneurship skills and vocational practical skills like tailoring, plumbing, mechanics, hair dressing to mention but a few. The young people in Uganda are economically vulnerable and a highly dependent group. This project aims to provide a hands-on skills development which will significantly contribute to promoting self-reliance among the youth. The skills that the youth will be trained in have been found to be very important in Uganda’s economy and has got a high demand among the population. Hence, we expect that the youth will benefit significantly by gaining knowledge and skills that will be essential in empowering them either to get employment or start up their personal income generating. All in all, this project will contribute towards increasing employment opportunities, reducing poverty rates, and economically empowering the youth. It is for reason that I look forward to find an investor, or interested parties who are interested in purchasing this project and implementing it to provide the youth with vocational, entrepreneurship training and provision of start up business capital.
