Executive Summary

This project will focus on supporting twenty registered Savings and Credit Cooperative Societies (SACCOs) in reducing poverty in the Acholi and Lango sub regions of Northern Uganda. The project will focus on implementing this through providing grants and capacity building programs to the SACCOs of this region. SACCOs in Uganda are owned, governed, and managed by members who have the same common bond. They are legal bodies registered under the Cooperative Societies Act. SACCOs are economic institutions involved in business activities for purposes of making a profit to grow, survive and become sustainable. In simple words, it’s a self-help organization in which a group of people stock their savings and offer loans to their own members. The Objective behind setting up SACCOs was to combat poverty by enabling the poor to train how to utilize limited resources. According to the to the Uganda National Household Survey, 2019/2020, Covid 19 forced at least 300,000 Ugandans into poverty. The survey, conducted by Uganda Bureau of Statistics (Ubos), indicates that during the 2019/20 financial year, income poverty, which also means living below the poverty line, worsened during Covid-19, increasing from 19 per cent to 22 per cent. According to the survey, 65.7 percent of people in Acholi sub region are now poor while 27.8 percent in Lango fall below the poverty line. With this background, it is imperative to note that through this project, the Acholi and Lango sub regions will benefit from grants and capacity building provided to strengthen its’ effectiveness and operations in contributing towards reduction of poverty levels.
